Does Trauma Work Have To Be So Scary? 🤔⁉️ My short answer is No 🌹 I remember wanting to talk to someone when I was 20 years old.  For some reason, I felt ashamed about wanting this... damn, the stigma starts early am I right?! Trauma only worsened and I was growing up so fast that by the time I was 14 years old, I said, "f%ck it." Turns out, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Because it normalized therapy. It normalized asking for help. It normalized trauma work... and I can tell you, what scared me more than getting help was feeling the same. 💥 I didn't unravel. But I did feel emotions. I was raw. 😭 I didn't hide when I was angry. I lashed out at times but felt human enough to make those mistakes and apologize. ♥️ Today, I'm a better human and a damn good mom for taking that step to face what I thought was scary. 💥💥 You get to learn how to feel if you want to. So many of us drank the kool-aid, believing the lie that we must choose. ... between ambition and motherhood ... dreams and sacrifices ... oppression and financial insecurity If the kool-aid makes the vision of balance disappear with just one sip, there are a lot of career-focused Mommas who drank and have been convinced that fulfillment simply isn't possible. I stopped attending corporate training on health and wellness long before my career changed. If You Wait For The Right Time, You'll Never Start ⏰ Women often think into the distant future for themselves but can plan the heck out of the present and near future for their families and friends. And it's so interesting how we do this for others, yet, we have growth + wellness needs and we tell ourselves that: 🔍 we don't have enough info 🔮 don't feel certain enough 🤹‍♀️have too much going on to justify taking care of our needs and wants 🤷🏾‍♀️But delaying only cements delay. I remember the lesson clearly - around the time #MiniMe was this age. I was keeping up with medical appointments, but only because I had to monitor my mini strokes.😬 But I delayed giving myself time, space and opportunity to receive support in other areas like my sleep, nervous system, appetite, energy levels... and intense moods, scattered-ness and impatience. 🥺💔 After getting really sick, I spent an entire week in the hospital, alone with my thoughts, fears which allowed me to get 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡.... ... about where I delayed ... about where I looked for perfect circumstances and people to help me ... about changing. 🤦🏾‍♀️ And my perspective shifted: the need to delay comes up occasionally but not in the way that it prevents me from taking action. Do You Talk To Yourself? I know you're not going to publicly answer me but reflect on this... Oftentimes we push thoughts to the side, push down our emotions, believing they will pass on their own. If we just cross that finish line, we hope things will quiet down on the inside. Because vulnerability has not been associated with strength.❌ Feeling vulnerable feels like loss of power because we must know it all, be it all, create it ALL...❌ In my experience though, working with now close to 200 moms at my retreats, in the companies they work for and 50+ brands➡️ vulnerability is being honest. It's transparent. It connects us on a human scale. It can even bring some evenness to power differentials. REFLECTION FROM MY MOM BRAIN ... Mom with a migraine brain that is. Yesterday was a trippppp. I woke up fine, enjoyed breakfast and cuddles with #minime. I even went for a walk after school drop-off. Without any warning ⚠️ comes a migraine. I had big plans, but ended up canceling meetings, staying out of my inbox and ignored the complaints about dinner being "ugh this again?!" I used a strategy that has worked for me and clients in the past: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 It's the process of questioning the thoughts of guilt and shame that often comes up motherhood. Thoughts on productivity, showing up... doing, questioning the truth of it all. This reflection exercise is 🔥🔥🔥 because it deflates guilt and uncovers the one thing we know but often don't honour: that we have good days and bad days. THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID I don't often post on the weekends, but as I sip on my second cup of tea, fatigue filling my brain down to my legs... I'm thinking about the excited weekend planned for #MiniMe Wishing we had no plans at all because I would rather spend the day in pj's and cozy socks. SITTING VS SITTING WITH FEELINGS One of the things I have learned, through meditation, yoga and other forms of holistic relaxation is that we can't think our way into relaxation... ... nor can we sleep off stress or exercise it away. LIKEABLE vs UNLIKEABLE For the longest time I've reflected on the importance of being liked... and... By Whom. I find likeability to be one more pressure point that moms face and it creates an enormous amount of anxious, energy-consuming thoughts IMO. But imagine how freeing it is to be ACCEPTED for who you are. RESPECTED for your thoughts, ideas, goals... Rather than being assigned Like or Dislike. Likeability has been given so much value that it's now become a token for inclusion, invitations and opportunities. I am disliked by so many and that's OK! I'm not their person. But most days, I am overflowing with the love O give and receive and that's what mom communities should feel like. THE MEANING OF REST If you've ever tried to relax in the tub... ...without alcohol...this post is for you. Because the act of rest and feeling rested are verrry different. Think about the times you're at a massage, tense for the first 10 minutes and after a while, you slowly drift off... Or when you're at a coffee shop talking to a few friends and time flies. UNLESS WE CREATE THE NORMS... They're not normal! 🤯"Well you chose to be a single mom." 🤯"Can you really manage alone?" 🤯"Make sure you find time to take care of yourself... you know go out and stuff." There's more that I've heard. And there has been much more that had me feeling hurt.😪 Think about it, how often are single moms actually included in those typical getaway and dinner plans? How often are single moms given the opportunity to see if they're comfortable going away or participating in activities that married women enjoy? When I started this work of normalizing REAL self-care, it was because single motherhood was referred to as all pressure and zero fulfillment. Self induced punishment rather than a questioning of standards and "norms". I wanted to change that for myself. Can I tell you what I have learned? I experience less emotional stress and hardship in some ways compared to partnered women with children. So I know for a fact, that taking care of ourselves has less to do with fitting in self-care and going out with friends as it having the right questions to reflect on, work through. And it's definitely more about practicing new habits and skills that are hella uncomfortable at first but well worth the result of achieving more equity at work and home than before. The bubble baths are great but this way is better, yes? I Have A Deadline And She Needs Me I used to hear myself say: I have a deadline BUT she needs me. But is a pain in the Butt isn't it?! In what disturbing world do we need choose between service to others and service to my family ~ our child? By what ridiculous standards are made to feel guilty by choosing one over the other? Our current world has done this to so many mommas. Our current societal standards influence~ if not dictates ~ how we should feel and why. ❌ Today my mind wanted to float back to ancient times when I felt guilty for everything and used BUT way too much. A Story About Friendship... A few faces are missing from this picture but almost one decade ago, we all worked together, these ladies and I. The work environment was toxic. It was both physically and emotionally unsafe at times, especially in their role. In my role as a Social Worker I wanted to get to know them, to include their voices and find common ground. They didn't trust me because that's what lack of safety does. One of them even tried to give me a reallllyyy hard time. For anyone that knows me, once I find my ground I stay there, especially if it's for a greater good. And so what started off as tense conversations, led to short transactional conversations, followed by tea conversations and social gatherings outside of work. I would not have predicted loving these ladies. They're my chosen family. I go weeks without speaking with them sometimes but they know I'm here and I know they're there. This is just one of my stories about human connection and I can tell you that had I not believed in it then, I wouldn't have such safe friends today. The (MOM) Struggle is real Yesterday it was nice to witness women sharing and listening to each other. What was even more remarkable was how how safe everyone felt to be themselves, sharing where they struggled and celebrated a lesson they learned and could pass along to a fellow momma. CHANGING IS HARD It's uncomfortable, and feels impossible. Because who we've been is all we know up to this point. And we justify the heck out of it. Over the next few days I'm sharing my perspective on Allyship to a mixed audience of leaders, sales and tech experts. And right away they're going to be told that allyship is not easy. That mistakes will be made, but that the human experience calls us to rise, stand up and speak up. No more excuses. They're also going to learn that we can feel more than one emotion and have more than one response to any given circumstance. Take the war in the Ukraine atm. We can feel sad that this is happening. We can also feel infuriated that Browns, Blacks and Asians are being targeted at the border when trying to flee to safety. Racism is wrong. War is wrong. Each require a response, yes? And sometimes when you do the right thing and raise the standard for human behaviour, you will feel like you're alone. You're not alone. This post should validate that for you. WHAT ABOUT ME?! What about my pain? What about my trauma? I've seen these patterns come up at least once in every community, workshop, and conversation. Victim comparison. Which on the surface, seems like an innocent cry out for help. But the reality is my trauma isn't better or worse than your trauma. My privilege gives me an abundance of power in some scenarios and in others, I need a little help from my friends. That's community. Because power and privilege doesn't exist in absolutes. And so where do we go from here? 1. Practice empathy. Meaning, listen first. 2. Provide meaningful support, not just, 'I'm sorry that happened.' Ask how you can help. 3. Save your story of oppression and hurt for another day. Note someone you can connect with to get the support your need. Owning our power means we can trust that we are seen, that we belong and that we are deserving to be heard. Imperfectly Perfect. I have bad hair days. At times my mood is low and I need to rest. I have had to reset and redefine what words like "achievement" and "success" look like and feel like for me. I have sat in awe at how miraculous oir bodies are, especially as mothers, to shift, change, adapt in order to raise humans. My body has healed from things I didn't even know was a possibility. I'm so grateful for what I have learned, all that I have been and all that is on its way. MOTHERS IN HISTORY Josephine Baker WOOOO this woman oozes LOVE.  After not feeling valued and seen in America, Josephine shared her acting talents and passion for activism in Paris.  She later returned to the U.S., using her power and voice to create opportunities for others. She called her children the 'Rainbow Tribe.' You know why? Celebrating Katherine Johnson 💫 #mimine loves when I tell her about this brilliant and impactfu mother in history.  Katherine finished high school at the age of 13 and after graduating with a double degree, she eventually married and had 3 daughters. She and her husband taught while holding down other jobs because quite frankly,  their salaries sucked. In 1951 after losing their home to a fire, they moved to a new town for a fresh start. Katherine was hired for NACA (now NASA) for her math skills, where, at that time,  women were called calculators for the men their worked for, on top of the segregation. The trick is not to do it on your own. Most moms don't fix their own cars, do their own major home repairs or self teach to get a new certification, right? We rely on someone to help us with those things. Why would changing lifelong conditions, patterns and mood yo-yo's be any different? The reason why work-life balance feels so out of reach and overwhelming is because... we try to do it alone. Which is the opposite of what we actually need. Real change is when we practice the new skill, lean on someone when we revert to old ways and then work through the discomfort of people not liking the new version of us. To Be Authentic... It's defined as being: Real Genuine And when you think about it, being real has nothing to do with where you have traveled, how much money you've made nor the status you think you have in society. In fact, authenticity is who you are when all of these things and titles are stripped away from you. Who you are beneath motherhood, your work/biz roles and after the quantity of friends you think you have is you: The Human. There are things you believe in. Things you value. Things you're hella confused about and Things you're still figuring it out. And believe me, that's what makes you valuable. Celebrating Black Mothers in History I'm sure you know who Harriet Tubman is... This woman risked her life for freedom, a freedom that she brought to her family and friends - not just herself. I have tbh - I was bothered when I read recently that historians were keeping count of the number of lives she helped, arguing, "it wasn't 300 people, it was 70 to 80." Really?! 🤨 Even if she saved herSELF from slavery that was enough. Even if she saved ONE other life other than her own, that would have been extraordinary, especially during those times.  So I don't care about the numbers. 💫I care about her belief to be a leader which outweighed her fear. 💫I care about how she she was thoughtful, strategic and had a simple vision but the impact of her vision and actions were that big. I'm grateful for her - she continues to change lives today simply from what she did. Our insides whisper... And then they shout. We've been taught to: Shut down Shut others out To be right. To tell others they're wrong. To compete - to better than... But we haven't been taught the power of pausing. The power in taking a breath, feeling ~ listening to ourselves. The noise is always going to be there, good luck trying to escape it. Trials and circumstances that take us to dark places will show up - but if you're afraid of not knowing what to do and how to be then that's the best place to start. How do we start? By asking for help. And being open to getting the help. Because it may not be the help you predicted and it may be so completely new - but it can only help you if you stop convincing yourself that you've got it figured out on your own. Pause. Be Open. Get the help you need and deserve. Aftet all, no one that I know hopped on a bike magically knew how to ride it immediately.

CELEBRATING MOTHERS Myrlie Evers-Williams had three children, which she raised on her own for many years after her husband and partner in activism was killed. She worked tirelessly to make sure justice was served, standing by her high moral code. In order to pay the bills, she began public speaking, all the while managing her mental health and the trauma her kids were experiencing from their father's death. In fact, the only reason she got up each day was because she promised her late husband to take care of the children Eventually, Myrlie decided a fresh start in a new town, with new opportunity was best for her family. She then achieved her educational goals, entered politics and later re-married. She is truly an example of taking steps, finding one reason to get up each day and living authentically. ACCEPTANCE Over the past week one specific pattern kept coming UP. Acceptance is this: ● It's not our job to convince another person to reciprocate respect. ●Mistakes happen all the time. It's apart of being Human. Taking responsibility, though, is an undervalued asset that would make the way forward so much better. ●While analysis is important, spending too much time there can be paralyzing. Once we know enough to take that next step, we should. I learned that the person who ended up killing my Aunt from drunk driving finally pled guilty.... after 2 YEARS. 2 years of my Uncle and cousins stressing while grieving during a pandemic. I learned that the distrust in a larger system this caused is so hard to navigate because now we must hope that sentencing will reflect the harm caused, the lack of timely responsibility taken and the reliving this family had to do long after the nightmare of losing someone tragically. I learned that it is our job as women to commit to a new pattern even when we are tested, even when those who test the new standard make us feel crazy. They can test but we need to stay in the new - it WILL get easier. I learned that new patterns and ways of being are more succesfull with trusted support. I had my hands held by mentors and few women I know have my back through it all. I learned that sitting across from a dear friend enjoying High Tea was a dreamy way of ending an emotionally intense week. If there is a new level you're headed towards, find someone to hold your hand.
